The sketch is the capturing of the essentials of a subject without details. The phrase "quick sketch" has come to be synonymous with a drawing done quickly to capture the action or gesture. The famous 18th century English artist Hogarth made a comment about Michelangelo that he never sketched haphazardly, for every line had a meaning.
